Honours Project
‘a crack in the wall’ comprises of two companion publications which explore the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, as well as showcasing a personal understanding and interpretation of wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is an aesthetic. It is a philosophy that is derived from the Japanese culture centred on the beauty of appreciating things through three core principles imperfection, incompleteness and impermanence. It is the beauty hidden right in front of us.
‘a collection of imperfections’ is my personal photographic journey, documenting my life in Kelburn during lockdown. Together, they explore my interpretation and understanding of wabi-sabi and are designed to engage the reader in this fascinating concept.
